Abbreviations and Definitions for Olympic Kilns

Choosing the right kiln can be daunting so we’ve created this list of abbreviations to help you choose the right kiln for your specific purpose.

Abbreviations for Electric Kilns:

Olympic Kilns electric models are designated by the kiln’s inside dimensions, width and depth. Letter abbreviations with the model number explain how a kiln is equipped. The production, high volume electric kilns are designated by the cubic feet inside the kiln and letter abbreviations describe the design style of the kiln.

CS – clam shell loading

DM – dual media for firing glass and ceramics, 3” brick and the kiln fires to cone 10-2350° F – has lid element for glass fusing

GF – glass fusing kiln with lid element

E – An electronic controller equips the kiln

FL – Front-loading

H – 3” brick and the kiln high fires to cone 10-2350° F

HB – HotBox – small 120-volt kilns that fire to cone 10-2350° F

MAS – Medallion Artist Series with model number

TL – Top Loading Production electric kilns

Example: 
TopHat 2814E – 28” wide x 14” deep; Equipped with an electronic controller.

Example: 
FL12E – Front Loading electric with 12 cubic feet of usable firing space within the chamber; Equipped with an electronic controller.

Abbreviations for Glass Firing Kilns:

Olympic Kilns glass fusing studio line of kilns are designated by the model’s inside dimensions, width and depth. Letter abbreviations with the model number explain how a kiln is equipped. The high volume, production glass fusing kilns are designated by the cubic feet inside the kiln and letter abbreviations describing the design style of the kiln.

Bell – firing chamber lifts up by electronic winch and floor remains stationery

CS – clamshell loading

DM – dual media for firing glass and ceramics, 3” brick and the kiln fires to cone 10-2350° F – has lid element for glass fusing

E – an electronic controller equips the kiln

FL – front loading

GF – glass fusing

GFETLC – glass fusing kiln equipped with an electronic controller that has duplicate openings, top and clamshell loading capabilities

HB – HotBox – small 120-volt kilns that fire to cone 10-2350° F

SQ – square style design

Example: 
149GFE – 14″ wide x 9″ deep, Glass Fusing, Equipped with an electronic controller.

Example: 
1214FLE – 12″ wide x 14″ deep, Front Loading, Equipped with an electronic controller.
